Carly Fetzer was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, (HLHS). In simplest terms she was born with half a heart. Babies born with this condition cannot survive without multiple surgeries spread over a few years or without a heart transplant. This is the most complex of congenital heart defects.
Carly went through a series of surgeries but her path was not an easy one. She experienced a brain bleed as an infant during one of her open heart surgeries which led to developmental & cognitive delays, vision impairments & fine motor difficulties. Despite all of these challenges Carly still had a beautiful fighting spirit and with her infectious smile lit up every room she entered. She was a social butterfly and was caring, kind, and beautiful. People fell in love with Carly and she loved them right back.
Sadly, Carly passed away on April 26, 2019 at the age of 18 from complications of HLHS. The Carlly Fetzer Queen of Hearts Foundation was established by her family in memory of Carly & to carry on her legacy. Through Carly's Foundation, scholarships will be given out to local graduating seniors & meal vouchers will be donated to families of long-term inpatients at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to help ease the financial burden placed on these families during an extremely stressful time. Most importantly, Carly's Foundation will contribute to funding towards research specifically focusing on improved outcomes of cardiac children facing the same complications Carly faced.
